Can I Improve My IAQ?

The short answer to this question is: yes, you can. But, in order to improve your indoor air quality effectively you need to know the sources of bad IAQ. Once you find that out, improving your home’s air quality becomes easier.

3 Steps You Can Take to Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

1. Clean Your Vents

There’s no hiding that the vents in your home get dirty. Whether it’s because you don’t get your air ducts cleaned, or you haven’t changed your air filter; dust, debris, dander, and more fill your air with contaminants that make it hard to breathe.

Ideally, you should be getting your air filters cleaned every 2-3 months and your air ducts cleaned every 3-5 years. Cleaning your filter is important because it filters all the dust and dander that circles through your HVAC system. The air filters become filled with pollutants and once they become oversaturated, they work less efficiently.

2. Deep Clean Your Carpet

Sometimes your house needs a deeper clean — especially if you notice that your household members are starting to get itchy eyes and are sneezing frequently. Dust and dander fall into your carpet fibers and every time you walk through your home, especially with shoes on, you’re traipsing in dirt and embedding it into your carpet. Giving your carpet a good cleaning, especially over highly traffic areas can help prevent the chances of these contaminants being kicked into the air.

If you have pets, you should also make sure to groom them often. Pet dander is a big irritant for many people with allergies.

3. Invest in Plants

Plants serve all different kinds of purposes, and one of them can be to help clean your indoor air quality. These plants absorb the toxins in the home and act as a natural air purifier. Here are some examples of plants that can help:

  • English Ivy: this plant can remove harmful chemicals found in the home’s air.

  • Bamboo Palm: this plant removes things such as benzene and formaldehyde from the air.

  • Rubber Tree: this plant has been shown to absorb and breakdown chemicals in the air. It also absorbs carbon dioxide and converts it into oxygen.

These are just a few examples of plants that can help improve your indoor air quality!
